The Selsey Tram Way Bulletin No 17

By Bill Martin & David Pearce

June 2023

Excellent News

The Novium Museum in Chichester will host an exhibition on The Selsey Tramway between June 2024 and March 2026. We are now in discussion with Millstream Productions in Emsworth about a film to accompany the exhibition.

There will also be a collection of artefacts, including the name plate of Ringing Rock, tickets, a section of rail, etc. We have visited the Colonel Stephens Museum at Tenterden with a view to borrowing some of their artefacts.

Please let me know if you have anything for the collection.

Not such good news

Feedback given to West Sussex County Council highways has resulted in the information board for Selsey Town Station on Manor Road, having to be altered for it to be considered ‘safer for young children’.

Sadly, the information board for Selsey Beach Station has been destroyed by anti-social driving in the car park.

Better News

Chalder Station

We have been in contact with the Conservation Officer at Chichester District Council as well as two specialist architects and now have quotes for the restoration of the waiting room at Chalder Station. However, the first stage will be to ‘restore’ the platform in an attempt to reduce the amount of on-going clearance of undergrowth that is needed on a regular basis. We are also making enquiries into the possibility of re-instating a section of track!

Tramway Walk Saturday August 26th

At the outset of the overall Tram Way project it was our intention to ‘Walk The Selsey Tram Way’ as an annual event. Feedback from last year’s very successful 125th anniversary walk was extremely positive. The only negative was, not the length of the walk, but the amount of time that it took to complete the whole route. So this year we will start at Beach Station in Selsey (at 10.30am) and walk north to Sidlesham, passing 8 of the 11 stations along the way, finishing at the Anchor where refreshments are available. Let me know* if you would like to join us - *click this link to email Bill your response.
