GETTING TO GRIPS: Wetland management for people and wildlife: Unmanaged Ditches

Ditches not connected to the wider network will flood during heavy rain events and dry up during drought periods. This benefits neither people nor wildlife. What would be helpful is to join up the neglected ditches to the rest of the system.

Ditches which are not managed regularly get blocked with debris and can become overgrown with brambles, willow and other small trees. This prevents water flow, can cause a build-up of silt and leaf litter, and shades out other marginal plants.

Ditches frequently get blocked with debris discarded by people who do not appreciate the
importance or function of ditches. This can take the form of litter, gardening waste and can even be a way of extending boundaries and building. This needs to be monitored and prevented.
